  1. Q:  My puppy is due for his neuter surgery and I want him to be pain-free for his procedure. Do you give your patients medication to prevent pain?

A:  Yes. All surgical patients receive preventative medication to stop pain associated with various types of surgery. We encourage you to call our office for more details. Thanks-good question.

  2. Q:  I purchased a 10-week-old puppy and the breeder said she has had all of her shots. What does this mean?

A:  The breeder has probably given the initial puppy shot(s) or vaccinations, and your puppy will need a series of puppy vaccinations to ensure protection from various diseases. We encourage you to call us to determine what your puppy will require.

  3. Q:  Everyone in the house has had the flu and now our cat Spunky acts like he has also had the flu. Can I give him Tylenol like I give my son?

A:  NEVER EVER GIVE TYLENOL TO CATS!  This drug is extremely toxic to cats—even one dose will make him very sick and could be fatal. Please call our office and schedule an examination for Spunky.

  4. Q:  My dog has diarrhea, what should I do?

A:  This is a very common occurrence, initially take the food away from your dog for 24 hours, and continue to provide clean water. If this does not resolve the
diarrhea, please call our office for further assistance.

  5. Q:  My cat isn’t always using the litter box, what should I do?

A:  It is very important to ensure that your cat is actually voiding urine! There are many reasons, both medical and psychological for your cat to avoid the litter box. Male cats that are straining inside and/or out of the litter box should be examined immediately because urinary obstruction is very common and this could be a medical emergency. Please call our office immediately.

  6. Q:  My dog got into the trash and I‘m worried that he might have eaten something that could make him sick. What should I do?

A:  First, try to determine what the dog has eaten. If you know immediately it’s something dangerous, such as bones or household chemicals, get immediate help. If your dog vomits and/or develops diarrhea after being in the trash, please call our office for advice. As always, the best cure is prevention. Most dogs are very attracted to odors and will at least attempt to eat almost anything, even garbage. To prevent access to garbage, use a garbage can with a heavy, latched cover or place the can behind a closed door or in a closet.

  7. Q:  My dog lunges on his leash and drags me along on walks, is there anything I can do?

A:  Yes, there is something you can do! Call our office and ask about getting your dog fitted for a Gentle Leader Headcollar.

  8. Q:  My dog gets carsick. Any suggestions?

A:  Yes, the likelihood of carsickness can be reduced by simply not feeding you pet prior to car rides. Instead, feed your pet upon arrival at your destination. Always bring your dog’s own food when traveling to avoid abrupt changes in his or her diet.

  9. Q:  When someone found my missing pet I had a hard time proving she was mine because her tags had fallen off. What can I do to prove my pet belongs to me even without ID tags?

A:  We offer the Home Again Microchip Identification System for both cats and dogs. Please call our office and ask about it.

  10. Q:  My older pet has trouble getting around the house and lots of trouble getting up and down steps especially in the morning after sleeping through the night. Do you think my pet has arthritis? Can I give them my Motrin or aspirin?

A:  Senior pets do get arthritis and it is extremely important that you call our office before administering any over the counter arthritis medications. Remember question #3!
