Heartworm infection is endemic and a serious health risk for dogs everywhere in the U.S. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes carrying microscopic heartworm larvae, which enter the dog’s bloodstream and migrate to the heart and lungs. If left untreated, heartworms can clog major blood vessels, resulting in organ failure and death.

However, heartworm it preventable and there are several preventatives on the market. Most are pills that are administered once a month. However, sometimes a dose is missed and the dog is at risk for heartworm.
